Decors and mosaics in stoneware: where the detail makes the room

A decor does not cover a surface: it tells its story. Geometric cementine, hexagons, listelli and mosaics are there to draw a niche, a cooking area, the base of a shower or the band that separates two materials. Being porcelain stoneware, they have the same strength and the same water absorption below 0.5% as the rest of the catalogue: they are not delicate pieces, they are different pieces.

How much decor you actually need

The practical rule is one decorated surface per room: if the floor is in cementine, the walls stay plain; if the wall is decorated, the floor acts as the background. That is why decors are bought by the m² of the actual surface, not by the whole room, and why it is worth measuring exactly the area to be covered before ordering.

Mosaics and sheets: how they are counted

Mosaics are often sold mesh-mounted in sheets: the technical data sheet gives the m² covered by each pack, so the calculation stays in m² as for the rest of the catalogue. The wastage rule applies here too, with 10% more for straight laying and 15% for diagonal and herringbone, rounded up to whole packs. How packs and wastage are worked out.

Matching the decor to the background

The safest way not to get it wrong is to start from the background — a concrete effect, a pale stone, a wood — and choose the decor that picks up one of its tones. Frequently asked questions

Are decors laid like other tiles?

Yes: they are porcelain stoneware of the same thickness as the series they go with, so they are laid with the same adhesive and the same joint width. Mesh-mounted mosaics are laid in sheets, following the m² coverage stated on the data sheet.

How much decor do I need for a bathroom?

It depends on the surface you want to decorate, not on the room: usually one wall, the shower niche or a band. Measure the actual area, add 10% wastage allowance and round up to whole packs.

Can I use decors on the floor?

Many of them yes, but not all: the Room field on the product page states which uses the manufacturer declares them suitable for, and the slip-resistance rating shows how much grip they have when wet. Some mosaics are made for wall tiling only.
