Marble effect stoneware: the veining of marble, the practicality of porcelain

Real marble is porous and acid-sensitive: a glass of lemon left on the worktop leaves a mark, and the polish has to be redone over time. Marble effect stoneware gives you the same veining with water absorption below 0.5%, it does not go dull and it asks for no treatments. It is the most elegant choice in the catalogue, and in large rectified sizes the grout joint almost disappears.

Whites, greys and blacks: choosing the veining

Calacatta marbles have sharp veins set well apart, Statuario a finer pattern, while grey and black marbles are materials of contrast, superb on a single wall or in a small bathroom. Polished, honed or natural

A polished surface brings out the veining and is splendid on a wall, but on the floor it shows footprints and is more slippery: in bathrooms and kitchens a natural surface with an R10 slip-resistance rating is preferred, keeping the polished finish for wall tiling. Large sizes and minimal joints

The marble effect is at its best in large rectified sizes, where the joints go down to 2 mm and the pattern carries on from one slab to the next. Frequently asked questions

Does marble effect stoneware stain with lemon and wine?

No: unlike real marble, which is porous and acid-sensitive, porcelain stoneware has water absorption below 0.5% and a surface that household acids cannot attack. It is cleaned with a neutral detergent.

Is the polished finish slippery?

A polished surface generally has a lower slip-resistance rating than a natural one, so on bathroom and kitchen floors the natural finish with an R10 rating is preferred. The value declared by the manufacturer is shown on every technical data sheet.

Is the veining the same on every tile?

No, and it should not be: the most realistic marble effect series are V2 or V3, that is with a pattern that varies from one tile to the next. The shade variation code on the data sheet tells you how much variation to expect.

Is a large size worth it in a small bathroom?

Often yes: fewer joints mean less visual grid and a room that looks bigger. You do have to allow for the cuts around doors and sanitaryware, and for the fact that a large size needs a properly level substrate.
